
According to a release, the new section will provide "news, commentary and analysis on technology business activity in Europe, as well as start-ups, digital entrepreneurship, and gadget and service launches relevant to the regional market".
Rooney, a former web developer, will also write a new technology blog on the Journal's European site from his base in London.
Neil McIntosh, editor of europe.WSJ.com, said, "The business side of technology has always been a key component of The Wall Street Journal’s coverage in Europe, and Ben Rooney’s appointment will take it to great new heights."
Rooney began his career at the Daily Telegraph in 1991, and has covered the Iraq and Afghanistan wars for the newspaper. He has since worked for the Guardian on a freelance basis, writing its ‘Today on the Web’ daily column, and published four books.
