Harwood steps up from his previous role as news editor for the title, a position he has held since 2005. Other positions he has held since joining the newspaper in 1993 include US editor and news reporter.
Harwood started his career on regional newspaper the Surrey Mail before moving onto south of England news agency, Cassidy and Leigh (Southern News Service), he told Journalism.co.uk.
