WAN-IFRA has launched a new interactive tool called NewsArcade that allows journalists to transform existing news content into engaging, gamified stories.

Its core goals are to:

  • Rebuild trust in news among younger audiences (Gen Z) who are increasingly becoming "news avoiders"
  • Counter the spread of misinformation and disinformation
  • Boost media literacy by giving readers a more interactive, educational news experience

The NewsArcade Authoring Tool is a web-based CMS that lets journalists repurpose news articles into interactive, game-like stories. The stories are structured around key "news values" like analysis, impact and constructiveness.

Journalists can choose a news value and story genre, and then craft the narrative, headlines, quotes, and visuals. It also includes a library of examples and a short online training course for journalists.

WAN-IFRA is offering a free 6-month trial of the NewsArcade tool to pioneering newsrooms who want to experiment with this innovative approach to news storytelling. Interested newsrooms can reach out to newsarcade@in-two.com to apply.

The goal is for NewsArcade to help journalists engage younger readers, combat misinformation, and teach critical media literacy skills - all through an interactive, game-like news experience.

The project is co-funded by the European Union and involves eight partners from five countries.
