If you are anything like us, you both want to know everything there is to know about artificial intelligence, while simultaneously wanting to shut out all the noise and never hear the words "AI strategy" again.

Much of the online content about how AI can save (or ruin) journalism is either too complicated to understand, too repetitive or totally useless.

Very few people can call themselves AI in journalism experts. But there is a handful of smart writers out there who are doing their best to cut through the noise with sensible newsletters. Here is our pick:

The Field Note Newsletter

My new favourite fortnightly newsletter by author and advisor Dietmar Schantin breaks down what AI means for journalism today. Each issue brings conversations with senior editors, transformation case studies, plus three can’t-miss reads from across the sector. The no-BS style and pragmatic analysis make this newsletter a true field guide for newsroom leaders grappling with AI.

The Architecture of Journalism in the Age of AI — Dietmar Schantin
Journalism is not failing for lack of good journalists. It is failing because the architecture through which it reaches people. “The Architecture of Journalism in the Age of AI” is a practical framework for building what comes next.

News Machines

If you want to keep up with what’s happening in journalism and AI without wading through endless hype, this newsletter by media innovation journalist Ulrike Langer is well worth a read.

It looks at what news organisations are experimenting with, from AI tools and newsroom workflows to new ways of reaching audiences and making money. Langer digs into what’s working, what isn’t, and what other journalists can learn from it. It’s a useful source of ideas and inspiration, especially if you’re wondering what the newsroom of the next few years might look like.

Radically Informed

Fed up with reading about how AI will soon obliterate humanity? Then this unusually optimistic newsletter is for you. In the words of its authors, it seeks to explore, describe, report on and advocate for an immensely better information environment than we have ever had (thanks to AI, naturally). And if you never heard of an Abundance Agenda for News, you should subscribe. Penned by two respected researchers, David Caswell and Shuwei Fang, this newsletter may help you see the technology in a whole new light.
