The website SunonSunday.co.uk has been transferred to News International, seeming to confirm speculation that the publisher intends to replace the News of the World with a Sunday edition of the Sun.

The domain was initially registered under the name "Mediaspring" on 5 July, just two days before the closure of the News of the World.

But yesterday the Whois record for the address was updated to show it is owned by News International.

The publisher was unable to comment any further about its plans for a new Sunday title, but the domain registration seems to confirm the widely-predicted move of extending the Sun to a seven-day operation.

News International signalled its intention to further integrate its daily and Sunday tabloids some weeks ago, prior to the escalation of the phone hacking scandal, when chief executive Rebekah Brooks told staff that the company was creating what it called a "managing editor structure" across its four newspapers.

Brooks said the company was looking for common ground among the titles and said that it intended to "find ways of implementing efficiencies to editorial systems and processes and, where appropriate, we will find ways of introducing seven day working".

Richard Caseby, the former managing editor at the Sunday Times, was appointed group managing editor for News Group Newspaper, which publishes the Sun and formerly the News of the World.
