Credit: westy48 The annual awards, which were presented by the Duchess of Cornwall, also included categories such as Scoop of the Year which went to the Sunday Times for its report on alleged corruption at FIFA.
The London Evening Standard beat the Daily Mail and the Times, which were also shortlisted in the Daily Newspaper of the Year category.
"To be awarded Newspaper of the Year is a tremendous honour for the London Evening Standard," editor of the Evening Standard Geordie Grieg said following the result.
"It is two years since the Lebedevs bought the paper and, at times, the paper was a hair's breadth from closure. Today we are so proud to be singled out by the London Press Club for our journalists' brilliant writing and photography. We are also delighted that by going free we transformed the economic fortunes of our paper."
Other winners include the Sunday Telegraph, which took away Sunday Newspaper of the Year and ITN's Bill Neely who was named Broadcast Journalist of the Year.
