Alongside its main award to Yuri Kozyrev, for a photographic essay covering the Iraq war, which he started in March 2003, the Frontline Awards Committee has, for the first time, also made an additional Special Commendation Prize in its annual awards.
Arkady Babchenko was specially commended for his photographic coverage of the war in South Ossetia and Georgia.
The winner of the Memorial Award, which is occasionally rewarded in memory of members killed in the course of their work, cannot be disclosed for security reasons.
The awards 'focus on journalistic integrity, courage and the independence of spirit, regardless of nationality or media discipline and include the work of freelances', a release said.
Judges include: Jon Lee Anderson (The New Yorker), Jeremy Bowen (BBC), Patrick Cockburn (The Independent), Carlotta Gall (The New York Times), Gary Knight (VII Photo Agency), Christina Lamb (The Sunday Times), Allan Little (BBC), Anthony Loyd (The Times), Seamus Murphy (freelance), Vaughan Smith, (Frontline Club), and Jon Swain (The Sunday Times).
Money raised from the evening goes to the Frontline Fixers' Fund.
